Can a bank keep all your money when closing an account?

Date: 5/28/2021 9:07 AM (PST)

Chime bank closed my accounts without reason and won’t talk to me or give me access to the $6000 of MY money that I worked for! I don’t owe them money ... is this legal? And can you please help me to get my money? I am a single mom and I care for my elderly mother. I work 6 days a week as a service advisor for a Toyota dealership. I have a very stressful life! I do not just have money to throw away! That money was already spent on bills that I can now no longer pay because of what this place did to my account! Please please help me!!!!

Hello Stacey. Thanks for your question. There are usually three reasons why a bank will close an account. The reasons being suspicious activity, history of overdrafts, and dormant accounts. I believe it is customary for a bank to notify the account holder of the closing of an account. You should have received written notice, but if you did not you need to follow up with the bank as soon as possible to find out the reason why. Chime can be reached at 844-244-6363. I also recommend reviewing the company's policies posted on their website: We have contacted Chime with your complaint and are currently awaiting their response.

I also suggest following up with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ("CFPB"). The CFPB is a government agency that regulates banks, lenders and other financial service companies. They may be able to offer additional assistance: Currenty, Chime is "F" rated with BCA with over 200 complaints on file. Under complaint closing statistics on the company's BCA Reputation Report, click on View Reports to view the types of complaints we've received against Chime:

Please contact me directly at if I can be of further assistance.

Thank you for responding and reaching out to Chime. They never gave me any notice at all. And they give no real reasons why other than a very vague explanation.. I have not overdrafted snd I use my account regularly. I do not know if there was suspicious activity or not! I have reached out to them multiple times via email since that is the only way for me to contact them now that they kicked me off my membership with them. Up until this happened, actually enjoyed banking with Chime . However, what they did to me is messing with everything in my life and I can’t get past this! I wish I never put my trust in them!!

What do you think?
