  • Review and monitor the water bill monthly to check for unusually high use. Doing so may alert you to possible problems, such as leaks, that you may not be aware of.

  • Check automatic sensors on faucets, toilets, and urinals to ensure they are operating properly and avoid unnecessary water use.

  • Check water meters at night or on the weekend to detect leaks. There shouldn’t be any flow when all water using fixtures are turned off.

  • Keep restroom fixtures in good repair. Any leaks should be repaired promptly.

  • Consider replacing older fixtures such as toilets, sinks, and urinals with water saving products.

  • Replace tap washers promptly to avoid wasting water.

  • Shut off water-cooled air conditioning units when not needed, or replace the equipment with air-cooled systems.  You can consult with any of our member air conditioning companies for recommendations.

  • Instruct cleaning crews to use water efficiently for mopping.

  • Encourage employees to report leaks and problems with plumbing right away. Post a hotline number in restrooms and kitchen areas to reach management or maintenance personnel if there is a leak or plumbing problem.

  • Consult with your employees about different ways to conserve water and award prizes for the best ideas.

  • Be mindful of the outside of your building. Utilize water-smart landscaping products.

  • Wash company vehicles only as needed and try to stretch out the time in-between washes.

  • Lend your support to community water conservation efforts by participating in activities sponsored by your local water supplier.

  • Support projects that use reclaimed wastewater for irrigation and industrial uses.

With so many areas affected by drought, it is crucial that water conservation become an everyday practice whether at home or at work. It’s up to everyone to lend a hand. Are you doing your part to conserve water?
