Recently, fans of pop culture movies like “Annabelle”, “The Conjuring”, and “Dead Silence” shelled out thousands of dollars to The Scary Closet to make replicas of famous characters from the films, only to get caught up in a horror tale of their own when the company failed to deliver.

If horror movies are your niche, there is a wide variety of collectibles for every type of fan. Souvenirs run the gamut from small keepsakes to over the top relics that can cost a pretty penny. Rare and unique finds are often a must have for fanatics and to some the cost is worth it. Recently, fans of pop culture movies like “Annabelle”, “The Conjuring”, and “Dead Silence” shelled out thousands of dollars to The Scary Closet to make replicas of famous characters from the films, only to get caught up in a horror tale of their own when the company failed to deliver.

The Scary Closet makes and sells replica dolls, puppets, and prop paintings from horror films for hundreds to thousands of dollars each. The Los Angeles based company claims orders will be sent in one to two weeks, but some customers have never received anything. One such buyer contacted Business Consumer Alliance for help when the three Annabelle dolls he ordered never arrived. He explains in his complaint that he paid $4,200 by cashier’s check to The Scary Closet in June 2016, with the remaining $600 due upon delivery. Within two days the company’s owner, Mark Anthony, had deposited the check he received into the company’s account. When the items didn’t arrive, the consumer called, emailed, and sent letters to the company to inquire on the status of the order. Instead of replying, The Scary Closet ignored the customer and has yet to deliver the dolls or a refund.

This customer’s horror story isn’t the only one. Other complaints paint a similar dreadful picture of interactions with this business. And while BCA has reached out to the company numerous times for answers, they are unresponsive. The company currently maintains an F rating with BCA. In addition, there are other negative experiences with the company you can find online. The business doesn’t list a phone number or an address on their website or Facebook page, only an email address. Some unsatisfied customers claim the company has blocked users from leaving feedback on their social media pages.

So how can customers reduce their risk of getting ripped off? Well here are some tips to keep in mind when dealing with any company, especially an online business. First, always check the company out.  Before placing an order or considering doing business with a company, check with BCA to find out about a business’s reputation. You can also:

  • Search online for reviews and experiences from others that may have done business with the company to see what they have to say.
  • Check that there is a reliable way to contact the company, should you have questions or problems which you need to resolve.
  • Review the company’s policies relating to shipping, cancellation, refunds, and exchanges.
  • Whenever possible, use a credit card to make a purchase. Doing so allows a customer to dispute the charge if a problem arises.
