The recall was issued after Samsung received 733 reports of washing machines experiencing excessive vibration or the top detaching from the washing machine chassis.  Injuries caused by the defective machines include a broken jaw, injured shoulder, and other impact or fall-related injuries.

Consumers can choose one of three remedies: (1) a free in-home repair that includes reinforcement of the washer’s top and a free one-year extension of the manufacturer’s warranty. (Note: The free in-home repair is not available for mid-control washers at this time); (2) a rebate to be applied towards the purchase of a new Samsung or other brand washing machine, along with free installation of the new unit and removal of old unit. The rebate amount is based on the manufacture date and model of the recalled washer. Consumers who choose a Samsung washer will receive an additional loyalty incentive up to $150 toward their new Samsung washer purchase; or (3) a full refund for consumers who purchased their washing machine within the past 30 days of the recall announcement. Full details about the in-home repair and the rebate can be found at http://www.samsung.com/us/TLW.

Consumers will also receive in the mail a Home Label Kit that includes a control panel guide and additional safety instructions. Until the kit arrives consumers are urged to only use the delicate or waterproof cycles when washing bedding, water-resistant and bulky items. This these cycles are said to lessen the risk of the washing machine top unexpectedly detaching.
