Californians now have a powerful new way to take control of their personal information online.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta is reminding residents about a free, easy-to-use privacy tool that allows them to request deletion of their personal data from more than 500 registered data brokers — all with a single submission.
What Is DROP?
The Delete Request and Opt-Out Platform (DROP) was developed by the California Privacy Protection Agency (CalPrivacy). It allows Californians to:

Instead of contacting dozens (or hundreds) of companies individually, Californians can now use one centralized tool to make their request.
As Attorney General Bonta stated, data brokers collect and sell extensive details about our lives — including where we go, how we live, and who we are. DROP gives consumers a practical way to reduce the amount of personal information circulating online and lower the risk of misuse, leaks, or hacks.

DROP was made possible by the Delete Act, authored by Josh Becker in 2023. The law requires registered data brokers to comply with verified deletion requests submitted through the platform.
Since its launch earlier this year, the response has been significant. In just the first six weeks, more than 225,000 Californians signed up — a strong signal that residents want more control over their personal information.
Beginning August 1, 2026, data brokers must begin deleting consumer data upon receiving DROP requests. Companies that fail to comply may face penalties and administrative fines.
How to Use DROP: 3 Simple Steps
Using DROP is designed to be secure and straightforward:
1. Confirm California Residency
You qualify if you live in California or are domiciled in the state, even if temporarily outside California.
2. Create Your Profile
Provide basic identifying information. The data is encrypted and secure. You decide how much information to provide — the more information submitted, the more effectively brokers can match and delete your records.
3. Submit Your Request
With one submission, DROP sends your deletion and opt-out request to more than 500 registered data brokers.
