Companies providing interstate moves which are outside of the state you reside in are required to obtain a moving license through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. You can file a complaint or verify licensing by writing to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration located at 400 Virginia Avenue SW Washington DC 20024 or calling (888) 368-7238. Companies providing moving services within the state (intrastate) are required to obtain a moving license through the Public Utilities Commission. To verify licensing or to file a complaint customers may contact the Public Utilities Commission located at 505 Van Ness Avenue San Francisco CA 94102 or call (415) 703-2036.~California law requires carriers to give customers an information booklet prior to the move with the shipper's signature on the last page of the booklet and on the agreement. Failure to do so is a violation and the shipper is entitled to $100 upon completion of the move. Carefully read all of the information in the booklet. Generally an Agreement for Service must be provided three days in advance of the move. The not to exceed price listed on the shipping documents should be reasonable (e.g. not be more than 10%-15% of the quoted rate). If additional items or services are required a change order of service must be signed prior to moving any items. It is advisable to purchase additional insurance for lost or damaged goods since the statuatory liability is only .60 cents per pound.
