Comments and Analysis

Consumers nationwide have reported receiving robocalls asking, "Can you hear me now?" It's a scam. The caller is really a recording who may claim to have trouble with their headset, or may speak unclearly or fast and then ask if the other party on the call can hear them. The scammers record the call and have record of the party on the call saying "Yes". It is assumed that they can use this recording to sign the person up for purchases or subscription without their real consent.

If you receive a robocall, hang up. Or don't answer the call, if you don't recognize who is calling you. If you receive a message claiming you've won a prize or entered a sweepstakes, proceed with caution. More than likely you have not won any prize and should discard the call. If you have truly won something, an official correspondence will be sent to you with details on how you can claim your prize. Also keep in mind if you have not entered any contest or sweepstakes you have not won anything. In addition, you should never have to pay ANY amount to receive a prize you have "won".

If the caller claims to be from your bank, credit card company, government agency, or bill collector, verify the information before calling back. These entities typically contact you in writing. If in doubt, look up the official contact information for the business or agency and contact them yourself for more details.

You can always file a complaint with Business Consumer Alliance regarding a scam or company you have had problems with.
