They should inform people that the site is not an official DMV government site. Had I seen that, I would have searched for the real site.

I typed in a search for DMV NY registration and was directed to a private site. I wrongly assumed that the DMV had contracted with them to deal with registrations. I was extremely upset that I had been charged a fee of $15.00 for renewing my registration which is a free DMV service. I have since called the DMV to ask if what they're doing is legal, if my renewal for registration was even valid, and if I could re-do my registration on the official site and cancel the transaction with them. According to the DMV representative that I spoke to, the "service" simply takes the information that I provided and goes to the real site and registers my car for free (as I could have done). This seems fraudulent to me and I am very uncomfortable that they now have a great deal of information about me. I do not even know their timeline for completing the registration transaction. I sent an e-mail to them stating that I would be registering a complaint and more if needed. These kinds of practices seem to be intended to take advantage of people and they need to stop. I understand that it's a small amount of money, but I absolutely feel misled. It is to their credit that they have since refunded the fee, but I feel that more needs to be addressed.
