This after paying premiums for over 20 years received no support and had to deal with recovery on my own.

Identity theft credit cards opened in my name and PayPal allowed access to debit my checking account for 6000.00 until the account was dry. Working with LifeLock I was dealing with someone in India no support was given other than issuing a complaint number. All recovery was done in my own. I would never use LifeLock again. This after paying premiums for over 20 years. Hire US representatives and stop false advertising

Comments and Analysis

Many consumers find it convenient to pay for identity theft protection services. ID theft protection service companies often advertise to help you monitor consumer accounts and various other services for a fee. Before paying for ID theft protection services evaluate the plan, its benefits, and the reputation of the company offering the service.

Some companies offer subscriptions to credit monitoring services that claim to track your credit report, and generally send you an email about recent activity, like an inquiry or new account. The more frequent or more detailed the report, the more expensive the service tends to be. Other companies offer services to help you rebuild your identity after a theft. Many companies offer additional services, including removing your name from mailing lists or pre-screened offers of credit or insurance, representing your legal interests, promising reimbursement in the event you experience a loss due to identity theft, or helping you track down whether your personal information has been exposed online. Services can cost more $300 annually, depending on the company and services offered.

Before signing up for a service, make sure you understand what you’re getting. Some other useful tips include:

  • Check for any hidden trial periods, fees or cancellation requirements for subscription or free trial offers.

  • Look to see if any complaints have been filed against the company with BCA or with State Attorney General’s office.

  • Many services offered by ID theft protection companies can be done on your own, for little or no cost. Check out BCA’s guides on Identity Theft and Credit Freezes.
