Scam calls

Date: 2/8/2019 8:03 AM (PST)

I get so many threatening phones from people saying I owe money from payday loans. I’ve paid a ridiculous amount of money because they always say they will have me arrested or go to my job with police or forward information to the police dept. Are there any specific questions I can ask them to find out if they are legitimate? Such as a TAX ID #, business address, etc???

Good Morning Alice. Do not engage with anyone over the phone that is threatening you. A legitimate collection agency is not going to call you and threaten to have you arrested, they cannot do that. You can ask that they send you a letter to validate the debt. If you know you do not owe the money, then you have nothing to worry about. Never send money or provide banking information or credit card information to a complete stranger over the phone.

I am including a link to our Resource Guide on Collection Agencies. The guide is a good resource for tips on how to deal with collection agencies: https://www.checkbca.org/tips/collection-agencies/how-to-deal-with-a-collection-agency-69

Please contact me directly at vantillon@checkbca.org if I can be of further assistance.
