Sexual orientation AFTER a job is offered. Is it legal to ask?

I was offered a job at a nation wide store. (More than 15 employees)... Upon going online to fill out my profile information and answer all of their questions, i was asked my sexual orientation.

Do i identify as a memebr of the LGBT community?

Then i was asked my Gender Identity.

Is this legal?

Also i am in illinois. Not sure if that matters.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) requires that all private employers with 100 or more employees (plus federal contractors and some subcontractors) complete an EEO-1 report each year. Covered employers must invite employees to self-identify gender and race, but completion of the form is voluntary and should not affect your condition of employment. This form is to be used solely for completion of the EEO-1 report and kept separate from other personnel records and accessed only by H.R.
