How can I tell if a check I received in the mail claiming I won a large sum of money through a sweepstakes or lottery is legit?

Usually it's not legit. They try to lure you into their affiliates. Last week I received one of these from Publishers Clearing House, I would have had to fill out a few things and send it off. It's just a way to get you to "agree" to send junk mail to you.

If you didn't participate in any sweepstakes, it is likely a scam! You should also read all the fine print on these types of checks, some automatically sign you up for services you didn't know about and once it is cashed at your financial institution that company has your account number and bank routing number, which could be disastrous.

This is a scam and if you fall for it, you'll wind up on the short end of the stick. Odds are the check is counterfeit.
