It is never easy to admit when you have been fooled. In fact it is quite embarrassing. However, if we don't come forward and admit that we fell for a scam, then others may fall to the same fate. On that note, I'd like to advise all my readers to avoid doing business with Suzanne the self proclaimed "Butterfly Lady."
Suzanne has been offering free butterfly eggs, larvae, and chrysalis to be shipped to your home and all you have to do is pay for shipping. Granted, the shipping is a bit high but it is still a lower cost than going through a more reputable site, such as Insect Lore.
This deal seemed too good to be true but when I first came across the offer several months ago it seemed legit. Her Facebook page was full of happy customers and the only negative review I could find on Google was from someone who received their larvae a few weeks late. So I went ahead and placed an order. An order which was supposed to arrive over a month ago. An order which has never arrived.
Suzanne has not responded to emails, Facebook messages, etc.. I did some Googling and found that in the past few weeks there has been a surge of negative reviews for the Butterfly Lady on Yelp. Several of the reviewers had been waiting months without contact from Suzanne. A few had butterfly larvae arrive, dead, only after placing complaints with PayPal and a third party mediation service. One reviewer said that Suzanne had gone as far as to send her an email threatening to go to the principal of the school the woman worked at if the customer did not retract their online complaint. I wanted to believe that this was simply a woman who did not anticipate the interest her offer would gather, someone who meant well but bit off more than they could chew. However upon reading these reviews, and having been blown off by Suzanne myself when I attempted to confront her, I can say without a doubt in my mind that this woman is a con artist.
$10 may not seem like much but remember, when you steal $10 each from literally hundreds of people, you are making profit. Whats worse is that many of the people whom she is stealing from are low-paid public school teachers and homeschooling families on a budget. Beyond taking away money that could be spent on other learning experiences, she is disappointing children across the country. My own son was so excited when we ordered the butterfly larvae. He ran to the mail box with us everyday the week they were supposed to arrive. He was so disappointed when we sat him down and explained that they weren't coming. Next year I will be certain to order from a more reputable company, regardless of the costs. I urge others to spread this message, hopefully someone else will learn from my mistake.
